Why is 7 considered lucky?
There isn’t one definitive reason, but several influences combined over centuries.
🌌 1. The Ancient Sky
Long before telescopes, people could see only seven moving celestial bodies against the stars:
- Sun
- Moon
- Mercury
- Venus
- Mars
- Jupiter
- Saturn
These became associated with the seven days of the week and gave the number tremendous significance.
📖 2. Religious Symbolism
Many religions feature the number repeatedly.
In Christianity:
- God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh.
- Seven virtues.
- Seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.
- Seven churches in Revelation.
- Seven seals.
Judaism has:
- The seven-branched Menorah.
- The Sabbath on the seventh day.
- Seven blessings at weddings.
Islam speaks of:
- Seven heavens.
- Pilgrims circling the Kaaba seven times.
Many Eastern traditions also regard seven as representing completion or spiritual development.
🌿 3. Nature Seems to Like Seven
Some examples:
- Seven visible colors in the traditional rainbow.
- Seven notes in the major musical scale.
- Human skin tends to regenerate in roughly seven-week cycles (a popular simplification of a more complex process).
- Many flowers naturally have seven petals (though not most).
It’s enough that ancient cultures began noticing patterns.
🧠 4. Psychology
One of psychology’s famous findings is “The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two.”
It suggests people comfortably hold around seven items in working memory.
That made seven feel naturally “complete.”
🎰 5. Gambling Reinforced It
Casinos helped cement the image.
Three sevens:
777
became associated with jackpots and good fortune.
Movies, advertising, and slot machines spread that symbolism worldwide.
So… what is Luck?
This is where things get interesting.
There are really three ways to think about luck.
🍀 Random Luck
The traditional definition:
Something good (or bad) happens that you didn’t control.
Winning a raffle.
Finding a $20 bill.
Pure chance.
👀 Opportunity Luck
Successful entrepreneurs often define luck differently.
Preparation meets opportunity.
Someone notices an opportunity that hundreds of others walked right past.
The “luck” came from being prepared enough to recognize it.
🤝 Social Luck
Many “lucky breaks” come from people.
Meeting the right client.
Getting introduced to someone.
Being remembered because you consistently help others.
That’s less random than it appears.
One of my favorite definitions
“I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.”
This quote is commonly attributed to Thomas Jefferson, although historians aren’t certain he actually said it. Regardless of its origin, it captures an important idea: what looks like luck is often the result of persistence and preparation.
